We’d heard that you can see the light from stars millions of years after the stars themselves have burnt out, because their light is still traveling through space. Not sure if that’s true or not, but it’s the idea of seeing something that is no longer there. The song’s meaning is pretty much
summed up in the chorus lyrics ‘holding on to a ghost.’ It can apply to a relationship, a version of yourself that no longer exists, or a memory.
